Thus the update couldn't be applied and you would be stuck with a seemingly broken Galaxy Client. If your debug.log file was very large the GOG update process would fail and Galaxy would not start. As you might expect, verifying a 100 GB file takes some time. The patch GOG released Monday their time solved this issue and removed the file, but in order to do so the update had to verify the debug.log file. The bug related to debug.log caused it to consume large amounts of memory each time you played with the in game UI.
